Every year brings a whole host of new things, and 2017 promises to be no different. Here are some of the things that we are expecting to change in the healthcare industry this year and how you can make sure you’re prepared.
Reimbursements are a big thing! In fact, being able to attain full reimbursements is the best absolute way to reduce overall costs. By reducing the number of HAI’s, reducing readmissions, and increasing HCAHP scores and overall patient satisfaction, your facility is going to boost those reimbursements! Utilizing technology for tracking, analyzing, scheduling, measuring, assessing and documenting every call button push, rounding visit, bathroom call, and pain management issue can get you closer to your compliance and patient satisfaction goals than ever before.
More Medical Research
Medical research has done a lot for elder care, and it will continue to do so in the coming year. The 21st Century Cures Act is going to revolutionize cancer research, and Alzheimer’s research is also undergoing a lot of funding currently. However, businesses that develop valuable drugs may spike the prices so that they are not affordable for elders. The government is aware of the drug price issue, but regulation may not come swiftly (or in 2017).
Caring for Caregivers
If you are a caregiver, you know how taxing the job can be. Many times, caregivers are overworked, depressed, tired, and stressed out. As a result, they neglect their physical and emotional health at the expense of their loved ones. Expanding community programs and home programs can help take some of the strain off of caregivers, and hopefully this lies ahead for elder care this year.
A Shortage of Healthcare Professionals
A concerning shortage looming this year is that of qualified healthcare professionals to care for the aging population. There is a lot being done to help encourage young people to enter the health field, but change does not happen overnight. Loan forgiveness, training, wages, community programs and scope of practice are all issues that may be on the agenda for the healthcare community throughout 2017.
